onkologika.ch user analysis

What does a user-friendly website look like? With this question in mind, experts from the SCDH, the Academic Society of Oncology Nursing (Akademische Fachgesellschaft Onkologiepflege), Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, the Insel Gruppe network of hospitals and the Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen evaluate the website of the Swiss professional association for oncology nursing, Onkologiepflege Schweiz. In line with the SCDH’s participative approach, users from a variety of care settings and regions of Switzerland are involved in the evaluation.

https://onkologika.ch is a website aimed at specialists in the field of oncology that provides information on parental medicines used in oncology for practitioners. Around 150 medicine fact sheets are available for download from the site. Each fact sheet details a medicine’s preparation, administration, undesired effects, premedication requirements, storage and stability. The fact sheets are drawn up, reviewed and continually supplemented and updated by experts in oncological nursing, oncologists and pharmacists.

A multiprofessional team of experts from the SCDH, the Academic Society (AFG) of Oncology Nursing, the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, the Insel Gruppe network of hospitals and the Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen examine the questions of when users had trouble finding certain information and how the design of the user interface of onkologika.ch could be improved to make the site easier to read and understand.

In a first step, an analysis of the site’s design is carried out. This results in three key findings: a higher-contrast font on the landing page would contribute to greater legibility, the inclusion of information on up-dates in the fact sheets would increase transparency and the addition of navigation and filter elements as well as a clear hierarchisation on the information sub-page would simplify the user journey. In a second step, an online survey is conducted among 60 nurses to learn more about the requirements and purposes of onkologika.ch from the standpoint of its users. The survey reveals that while users find the page with the fact sheets to be clearly structured, they do not feel that it is intuitive in terms of use. The results of the design analysis and the online survey are discussed in workshops attended by nurses and the team of experts from onkologika.ch.A final report submitted to Onkologiepflege Schweiz compiles the results and provides concrete recommendations for improving the website.
