Kwer is a crockery set that enables or simplifies independent eating for older people and people with disabilities. It was developed together with the users and combines aesthetic design with high functionality. As part of a BRIDGE proof of concept, the existing prototypes are being further developed at the SCDH in collaboration with the users and a possible expansion of the product family is being considered.
Over 1.8 million people in Switzerland live with a disability and the number of older people with motor or cognitive impairments is steadily increasing. Products are needed that promote autonomy, improve quality of life and reduce the workload of carers.
Kwer is a universal tableware set that is customised for people with disabilities. It combines aesthetic design with high functionality and makes everyday life easier without being stigmatising. The crockery set is based on intensive research and a co-design approach that actively involves users in the development process. Firstly, a comprehensive needs analysis was carried out, which included interviews and observations with affected people as well as tests of competitor products. Based on these findings, the first prototypes were created using 3D printing and tested in collaboration with the users to ensure that the design and functionality met their needs. Long-term tests are currently being carried out with porcelain prototypes in institutions and private households to evaluate the functionality and acceptance of the products in everyday life. The feedback collected is continuously integrated into the development process, enabling iterative improvements.
What advantages does kwer offer?
- Aesthetics: kwer's design appeals to different user groups, including people without disabilities - a significant advantage over the aids available on the market.
- Unique functionalities: kwer combines a sloped surface for sauces, raised edges, non-slip properties and dishwasher and microwave suitability - features that have been developed in collaboration with users. It is the first comprehensive set to offer all these functionalities, as opposed to individual, stand-alone solutions that are common on the utensil market.
As part of a BRIDGE proof of concept funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and Innosuisse, the SCDH is developing the existing prototypes in collaboration with users and considering a possible expansion of the product family.
